Capturing the legendary Aurora Pokémon in Pokémon SoulSilver is a unique experience compared to other roaming legendaries. Unlike Raikou and Entei, Suicune follows a fixed scripted path across two regions before you can finally engage it in battle. Tracking this majestic creature requires patience and specific progression through the main story.
Initial Encounter and Johto Tracking
Your journey to locate Suicune begins in the basement of the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City. Approaching the legendary beasts causes them to scatter, initiating Suicune's scripted trail. You will next spot Suicune at the northern shore of Cianwood City and outside Mt. Mortar on Route 42.
After these encounters in Johto, Suicune shifts its path toward the Kanto region. You must progress far enough in the narrative to defeat the Johto Elite Four and board the S.S. Aqua. Completing these story steps ensures the legendary Pokémon continues to appear in future locations.
Continuing the Pursuit into Kanto
Once you arrive in Kanto, head directly to Vermilion City Harbor where Suicune will be waiting briefly. After interacting with it here, it will leap away to Route 14 on the eastern side of Fuchsia City. This marks the final time Suicune flees before settling into its final stationary location.
To trigger the final encounter, you must also help Gym Leader Misty return to her gym in Cerulean City. Make sure you visit Cerulean Gym after resolving her event on Route 25. Taking care of these prerequisites ensures Suicune remains static and ready for battle.
Final Location on Route 25
Travel to the far end of Route 25 near Bill's cape house to find Suicune waiting on the cliffside. Unlike roaming encounters, this battle functions like a standard stationary legendary fight where the Pokémon will not run away. Be sure to save your game right before starting the battle in case anything goes wrong.
Suicune appears at Level 40 with a versatile Water-type moveset. Preparing your team in advance gives you complete control over the engagement without the stress of chasing it down again.
Recommended Battle Strategy and Pokéballs
When entering combat, lead with a Pokémon capable of inflicting status effects like Sleep or Freeze to drastically raise your catch rate. Use moves like False Swipe to safely reduce Suicune's health to 1 HP without knocking it out. Avoid using strong Grass or Electric moves that might accidentally cause a critical hit.
Stock up heavily on Net Balls and Ultra Balls before arriving on Route 25. Net Balls are exceptionally effective because Suicune is a Water-type, offering higher success rates than standard Ultra Balls. Patience and consistent status management will guarantee a successful capture.
